A research degree is the ultimate opportunity for you to pursue your own specialist interests. Research is extremely stimulating and exciting as it involves producing something original that contributes to the further understanding of a particular subject. Research programmes involve individual supervision by a faculty member who has an interest in the topic. This emphasis on personal guidance and independent study is a key characteristic feature of research degrees in the UK. A UK research degree will give you high-level skills suited to careers in business, applied research and higher education.
MPhil/PhD
Most universities require you to register first for an MPhil before transferring to the PhD at the end of the first year. The PhD is a research programme extending over three or more years, culminating in a dissertation or thesis of (usually) 70,000–100,000 words. The thesis must present original findings that are, in principle, publishable. In some subjects such as art, the thesis may be replaced by an original major work. And in social sciences, several published articles may be accepted in place of a single long thesis.
The British Ph.D. offers the following opportunities to international students:
you could produce an original piece of research, which may mean an important boost to your career
you could become one of the world's leading experts in a particular field
you'll receive a sound training in research methodology and practice – especially important if you intend to pursue an academic career
New types of doctoral programmes have also been developed in recent years aimed at experienced professionals in industry or professionals such as education, engineering and clinical psychology.
Split PhDs
Split PhDs let you split your research time between the UK and your home country. You'll usually spend a minimum of one year in the UK and then, complete your research in your own country but still have a supervisor in the UK.
Structure of a PhD programme:
The first year of a full time PhD is spent on initial registration. Immediately on enrollment you and your department head will produce the outline of your programme and it will be submitted to Research Degree committee for approval. You have the right to use all the facilities available to complete your degree and you can attend courses, lectures and tutorials to improve your knowledge in chosen subjects. You will be assigned an academic guide and he will supervise your progress. You both sit and formulate a methodology to be used in your particular case. You may be asked to take specialist seminars, conferences. All these three years you have to give the account of your progress to staff and fellow students from time to time, at informal seminars. During the second year you may be asked to carry out your remaining work. Usually the second year is accomplished by the data collection. This depends on your specific subject area. It may involve a field work or it may involve design of a model in interior. You consult with a specialist in your area, go through the published works in libraries or internet and prepare a questionnaire. Towards the end of the second year you will need to submit an initial analysis of your result. In the third year you may conduct detailed collection and analysis of your result, and organise them in a useful manner. These results have then to be interpreted, and the whole thing has to be organised into a thesis which has to be written, checked, referenced, printed and bound. Following the submission of the thesis, it will be read by two examiners one from within the industry and one from outside of the university, besides your tutor. This will be followed by a seminar and oral question answer session in front of select academicians and you are expected to answer the questions on your project. On Successful completion of these things you will awarded a Doctorate degree.
